Hand-Stitched Chain-link Quilt

Made from organic raw undyed cotton baton and fabric, this whole-cloth quilt* is hand-stitched with a repeating chain-link pattern. While vaguely reminiscent of the traditional wedding-ring quilt pattern, this contemporary motif conjures a new heritage--one perhaps that weighs warmth and security against utility and protection.

Many thanks to Loretta Martin from Loretta's Heritage Quilts, who put me in touch with the wonderful Mennonite women in Ontario who did the marking (transfer of the pattern) and stitching. Upon request for further information about the women, Loretta wrote a touching letter, which reads as follows:

Carey,

Your quilt was marked by Susanna Brubacher. Marking is a very intricate part of the quilt. Susanna is a very talented single woman, who is exceptional at marking. In the summertime she also does a bit of market gardening . . . She lives a very simple life. She drives horse + buggy + has no telephone . . . She is hardworking, happy + content. A real joy to know!

Minerva Clemmer is the lady that quilted your quilt. She is approaching 80 years of age. [!] She is a modern woman. Her quilting stitches are exceptional, especially when you consider her age. She is under a lot of stress right now. . . Often when a quilter is under such stress it is reflected in her stitches. I am happy to say Minerva's stitches were not compromised. If a customer has a quilt she wants in international competitions, she is the quilter that gets the job.

Enjoy your quilt!
Loretta

The Internaval Communication System

This precious, miniature tin-can telephone was hand-sculpted and cast in sterling silver and is connected by a 20-inch, 14-karat-gold chain. Optimally sized for belly buttons, this object can be either worn between a couple internavally, as a necklace (the tin cans conceal a clasp) or enjoyed as a thing itself in its velvet and leather case.

Googley Eye Coasters

Keep an eye on your coffee, ahem, I mean keep your coffee on an eye. Each coaster has a removable pupil, meant to accommmodate a dirtied spoon. The eyes can also work together as a hot pot holder. Approximately 3.5 inches in diameter.

Slug Salt Cellar

If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.
— Sir Thomas Aquinas

This salt cellar in the form of a slug reminds us that the potentially lethal can, if contained and used sparingly, be what heightens life's flavour. Approximate dimensions 8 x 2 inches.

Stump Stools

Here are the debut, the very first Cumulus Project objects! The wood for these three stools was harvested from a fallen maple tree on the forest floor in Storm Bay, BC (Thanks Hen!). The upholstery is white leather and copper tacks over sustainably-harvested-latex foam. Small, nearly-invisible feet 'levitate' them ever so slightly off the floor. Best suited for indoors or a covered outdoor area. Approximate dimensions of each stool 20 x 11 inches.
